Work is now under way on a £7million facelift for one of Aberdeen’s landmark energy industry buildings. Maersk Oil North Sea UK Limited (Maersk Oil) is undertaking a large-scale internal and external refurbishment of its headquarters in Altens.
The five-storey building in Crawpeel Road has housed several major industry players, including, Chevron, Oryx, and Kerr McGee in its 27-year history. Now occupied by Maersk Oil following its acquisition of Kerr McGee in November 2005, the building is being upgraded on a phased basis to allow for the continued occupation of the offices whilst the work is ongoing. The first phase of the contract is underway with Space Solutions designing and managing the refurbishment contract. The 59,600sq ft interior office space is to be transformed, with all floors becoming open-plan to maximise space and encourage communications among individuals, teams and departments. In addition it will be fully air-conditioned throughout. The work is also complementary to a wide range of staff initiatives in terms of health and work/life balance, including an on-site gym, a flexible nine-day fortnight working pattern, a staff restaurant, the provision of fresh fruit for all employees, an occupational health nurse and doctor available on site, and a thriving Sports and Social Club. In addition a range of environmentally-friendly measures are being introduced, including waste segregation, and new recycling points for paper, plastics, cans, and food. The building will be able to house 375 staff once completed. Managing Director Michael Engell-Jensen says: “We are committed to building a successful, long-term business in Aberdeen and this investment is testimony to that commitment. The refurbishment will enhance our efficiency and provide staff with a fully modernised environment, designed to improve the quality of day to day working. “ Steve Judge, Managing Director of architecture and space planning business Space Solutions, says: “This is one of the biggest refurbishment projects we have worked on in our 10 years of operation. We’ve worked with Maersk Oil from the outset to understand its business needs and ensure those are fully addressed by the new design. Maersk Oil has been keen to embrace new ideas and ensure it is making the best possible use of its physical resources to support its business objectives and staff.” |
